Handling Strong Emotions When Filing Bankruptcy

Most people have tried everything they can think of to avoid filing bankruptcy, from consumer credit counseling to living more frugally to debt consolidation. When none of the solutions work and filing bankruptcy becomes inevitable, there can be a deep sense of failure and shame on the part of the person who has to file. Although these feelings are normal, their intensity can really catch some people off guard. Fortunately, there are proven ways to get through this difficult circumstance in life.

The most important thing a debtor can do to get through the process with his or her self-esteem intact is to separate their own sense of self-worth from what happened to them financially. No one sets out in life to file bankruptcy, but the fact is that things sometimes happen that are beyond people’s immediate control and bankruptcy is truly the only answer. Debtors should remind themselves that they are good people who had unfortunate circumstances.

Even if the bankruptcy is the result of overspending on frivolous items, people can still learn from their mistakes and vow to make better choices in the future. Finally, it is helpful to look at bankruptcy not as an end, but as a fresh new beginning.
